This is a guide to help each of us understand our responsibilities in conducting business on behalf of Heidrick & Struggles, so that we maintain and enhance our reputation. Our Code of Business Conduct applies to all directors, officers, employees and contractors of our company. Each of us must read it and understand it to ensure that, as we go through our day-to-day responsibilities in our various roles at Heidrick & Struggles, we are making the right decisions, staying focused on our key values, and successfully serving clients and all of our other stakeholders.
Together our founders Gardner W. Heidrick and John E. Struggles pioneered the executive search industry when they created our company, building it on the values of treating clients and colleagues with respect, giving more than we take, and never compromising on quality, thoroughness, professionalism, honesty and integrity. Our Code of Business Conduct is a testament to our company’s more than 50 years as a leading executive search and leadership consulting firm, and our commitment to preserve that legacy.
By adhering to the principles described in this Code, Heidrick & Struggles can become an even better company. This document is not intended to be a litany of the “Dos and Don’ts” of doing business. Nor is it a mere formality required by government agencies in this era of greater accountability and transparency. When one company in an industry conducts itself well, the whole industry can benefit; with this Code we have the opportunity to bring new levels of excellence to our industry.
In addition to the integrity of Heidrick & Struggles, our actions are guided by the laws in the countries and communities where we do business. It is extremely important to our reputation that we know, understand and follow the laws wherever we do business. Our Code of Business Conduct reinforces that commitment.
This Code highlights the values that we share as a company—values based on honest and ethical conduct and behavior. And because it is a living document, it will, over time, evolve and grow. Sometimes situations develop where the appropriate responses and behaviors are clear. But we know that sometimes solutions are difficult to find. To illustrate the kinds of problems that employees might face, we have used short hypothetical vignettes here that address difficult situations in the workplace. While these vignettes are illustrative only and do not represent actual events at our company, we hope they will provide an opportunity for you to talk through sensitive issues with your colleagues to better understand how to resolve them. Our Code of Business Conduct is written, in part, to outline for you appropriate behaviors in these situations; but it should also leave you with the very clear message that it is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that through our actions the Heidrick & Struggles name remains synonymous with “trust,” “integrity” and “best in class.”
As questions arise related to our Code of Business Conduct, or if you need additional counsel for any situation, please feel confident about contacting our Chief Legal Officer for assistance and clarification.
If you have information about a conflict with the Code, you can also call the Heidrick & Struggles EthicsLine anonymously at (800) 735 0589 or, if calling from outside the United States, at +1 704 731 7242.
We encourage you to read our Code of Business Conduct in its entirety, and consult it whenever you need guidance. We hope it inspires you to lead the way.
