Ellen had just completed all the planning for the company’s big employee gathering. Many people would be traveling to New York for the meeting, and most everyone else would be listening in for the first time via a worldwide webcast. Ellen knew she was good at her job, even when she was in uncharted territory—which she was with the webcast. But she had to admit, she was nervous—they were using a small, unknown and untested company to host the webcast. The owner of the webcast provider was the brother of the company’s travel agent, Ken, who had always done a great job for them, really pushing hotels and airlines on rates. The New York meeting was no exception. But when it came time to select a webcast provider for the event, Ellen got the feeling that Ken might not work so hard for the company in the future if they did not use his brother. Her supervisor told her to not even bother with taking other bids. Now all she could do was hope for the best, even if this was the company’s biggest employee event of the year.

Employees involved in the selection of and purchase from vendors and suppliers should avoid situations that could interfere or appear to interfere with their ability to make free and independent decisions regarding such matters.

We respect ourselves and we respect others. The level of business ethics to which we aspire must also apply to our business partners. Just as a person is known by the company he or she keeps, the same is true with Heidrick & Struggles. We do not want to do business with a firm that has a questionable reputation. We will not do business with a firm that asks us to do something outside the bounds of integrity. If a business partner asks you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to the Chief Legal Officer about how to proceed.
